Abstract

This thesis aims to address the harmful health impacts of sedentary behavior among desk job workers in the information technology (IT) sector due to poor office ergonomics and high work pressure in the city of Bangalore, the IT capital of India. A study conducted by researchers from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, India on a group of desk-job workers in the IT division of a hospital revealed that more than 80% of the participants who reported “Work-Related Neck Pain” (WRNP) performed their daily work on a desk and chair, and of these, 87.7% worked with a computer. Another study conducted by KLEU Institute of Physiotherapy in India stressed on the “high prevalence” of pain in the neck among desk job workers using computers. Aside from neck pain, research also shows that sustained sitting at an office for many hours leads to other harmful health impacts such as numbness and swelling in the body. Furthermore, the risk for falling victim to mental disorders also increases along with the work stress created by a competitive IT environment.

This proposal brings forth an office space that aims to minimize the harmful effects of long sitting sessions through interior and environmental design. To alleviate musculoskeletal pain symptoms and mental pressure within the space without compromising much on efficiency, the project will have a good balance of objectives in the workplace.
