Approach

Approach

Approaching the issue of health disorders among IT workers in Bangalore due to inactive behavior in the can be done through a combination of both quantitative and qualitative methods.

From a quantitative perspective, journal papers that have been published containing statistical data will be studied to research about the percentage of desk-job workers that have reported musculoskeletal pain specifically in the IT divisions of companies in India. Published research papers that have collected responses to questionnaires that identify the percentage of employees who believe that their musculoskeletal pain is a consequence of their work environment and the percentage of those who believe that it is a consequence of other psychosocial factors will also be investigated. Both these will be important to define the scope of the design needed to tackle the problem.

From a qualitative perspective, either telephone interviews or zoom conversations will be conducted with employees that work in the IT division of renowned companies in India to understand how the poor office ergonomics that led to musculoskeletal pain are related to cultural, political or financial reasons. Dr. Deepak Sharan from the Neuromusculoskeletal Rehabilitation Centre in Bangalore, India will be interviewed through zoom interaction given his experience in investigating this issue extensively. He will be able to provide more information regarding the correlation work-related pain due to long hours of uninterrupted sitting to design flaws in the working environment.

Aside from the above-mentioned methods, further literature review and precedent studies will be conducted to explore design ideas that already tackle similar situations. Interior designers have had a footprint in Bangalore to assist growing start-ups to move out of congested office spaces to larger workspaces. All these research methods put together could allow the design of a space for desk-job workers at IT companies in India who deal with long uninterrupted hours of sitting.
